There’s not much to see in northern Mississippi; a Texaco just outside Byhalia is about the only shopping for the hour and a half you’re on the road. But once you reach your destination, you’ll be able to do a lot of shopping at one of the area’s two major flea markets (the other is in Tupelo). Tupelo is just another fifteen minutes or so beyond New Albany. You’ll be in Tupelo—the birthplace of Elvis Presley and the site of the battle of Tupelo—in no time. Because it has “modern” as well as “old” history, Tupelo is an appealing destination. There are several Elvis attractions, all within the scope of the Elvis Presley Center and Museum. In addition, you can visit the historic battle of Tupelo site, where in July 1864 Confederate soldiers met Union soldiers in one of the Civil War’s fiercest contests. Tupelo is also home to the Gigantic Flea Market—and it really is gigantic. People from miles around make the drive to pick up knickknacks at the market and home furnishings at the very well-known Flowerdale emporium. Aberdeen is a true small town with less than 7,000 residents, but it has a great bed-and-breakfast to recommend itself. If you happen to go in April, you’ll be able to catch the town’s beautiful antebellum homes on the Aberdeen Spring Pilgrimage.
