The land for the town of Parkville was purchased in 1840 by Colonel George S. Park, a veteran of Sam Houston’s cavalry who recognized the value of riverfront land for steamboat trade. As trade and commerce grew along the river, so did Parkville. Despite floods and train derailments, the town of Parkville is not only alive and well, it’s thriving. There isn’t a single vacancy in its downtown shops, which combine specialty items with antiques, crafts, books, clothing, home furnishings, and art. Park University, formerly Park College, was founded in 1875 and sits high on a bluff overlooking the town. It has always been an integral part of city activities, frequently opening its facilities to the community. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Kansas City. Each Day Trip includes, destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
