This trip encompasses cities and hamlets along the KATY Trail and Boonslick Country. You can overnight in any one of a number of places or head home the same way you came. If time permits, travel south to Jefferson City. Fulton and Hermann are the easternmost points on the trail. All along the way you can see glimpses of dense forests, wetlands, valleys, and rolling farm fields. In spring there are flowering dogwood and redbud trees. Fall brings crimson colors of maple and sumac, along with an abundance of wildlife that includes woodpeckers, red-tailed hawks, waterfowl, deer, and other creatures. Trail users can meander through slices of rural history, some of which predates the Civil War. The section of trail between Boonville and St. Charles has been designated an official segment of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, and the entire trail is part of the American Discovery Trail. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Kansas City. Each Day Trip includes, destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
