Settlers first came to this area as a part of the movement west. In 1739, a German immigrant named Jonathan Hager settled here with his wife, Elizabeth. He called this site Hager’s Delight and went on to found Elizabethtown in 1762. Later on, the two sites were officially established as Hagerstown. Today many of the existing structures are reminders of the life and times of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Middletown is an immaculately clean community with charming Americana houses. It has an air of old-fashioned comfort and homestead pride. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Baltimore. Each Day Trip includes destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
