Founded in 1745 by English and German settlers, this delightful town was originally called Fredericktown. As a frontier town it served the wagon trains that traveled through the surrounding fertile farmland on their way west across the mountains. Frederick has a wealth of historic points. Located in the beautiful countryside of Frederick County, Lily Pons is for the nature lover and curiosity seeker alike. Sugar Loaf Mountain is within 3,000 acres of privately owned countryside known as Stronghold.
The estate was deeded to the Stronghold Corporation by its owner, Gordon Strong, to provide a natural preserve for the public to enjoy. More than 100,000 visitors come to Stronghold each year. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Baltimore. Each Day Trip includes destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
