The countryside of southern Maryland has changed little since the mid-1600s when the first English colonists settled seeking religious freedom, new lives, and adventure in the New World. Even today, there are many significant churches dating back to the early 1700s.
Today, however, the heritage of the settlement comes to life with accurately reconstructed seventeenth-century buildings, a working tobacco plantation, a world-class archeological dig, living history and drama, historic areas, hiking and nature areas, excellent displays, a gift shop, and a wonderful restaurant. A visit to authentically restored Historic St. Mary’s City makes you realize that the depiction of early colonial times usually created in Disney films and TV programs is glamorous compared to the real life version. It’s a learning experience for all ages. Hike through the 1,600-acre state park to the fantastic Cliffs of Calvert. Some 30 miles of fossil-embedded cliffs tower high above the Chesapeake Bay. More than 600 varieties of Miocene fossils, fifteen to twenty million years old, are found along the beach.
