Historic, natural and challenging are the best words to describe this medium-distance cruise through West Virginia countryside. This pleasant ride takes you past some of the state's most noted Civil War battlefields, up some of the Mid-Atlantic's toughest hills and, with a little detour, into the East Coast's largest natural caverns, some with ten-story ceilings, towering stone columns, and crystal-clear pools. Terrain: the trip from New Market to Luray provides a couple of moderate climbs. The return trip, however, includes a 3-mile climb that many conditioned riders are unable to complete without walking. The return ride is not for out-of-shape cyclists.
