Nautical history buffs particularly ought to enjoy this ride, as its destination-Deal Island in the Tangier Sound-is the home of one of the last remaining skipjack fleets. Skipjacks are sailing vessels that by law may not be motorized. In the nineteenth century they were the primary way fishermen tongued for oysters. Today, the dozen or so skipjacks at the small Deal Island harbor are one of the last fleets of the waterman's work boats. On the way out you'll pedal through the tidal marshland of the Deal Island Wildlife Management Area. Watch for great blue heron and other shore birds. Terrain: virtually flat, although there can be persistent headwinds on the way out. Very low traffic, and Rte. 363 has a lanewide shoulder almost its entire length.

This is a good ride to break up the monotony of eastern shore riding. The Wicomico back roads are scenic and shady. There is a headwind out but as it usually does here, the wind swirled so don't count on a tailwind back. The highway stretch between Wicomico and Deal Island is boring and can be hot. Get water before hitting this section if you are out. Deal Island is quaint and scenic. Overall its a nice tour of the eastern shore. Good for logging miles but not for any climbing. On a windy day you will have to work.
