Be sure to pack your camera for this jaunt into the northern part of Frederick County. Rolling, lightly traveled roads take you through a valley from which you can gaze at the distant Blue Ridge Mountains. At the northernmost section look for the imposing shrine of Mount Saint Mary's College in the mountains. Besides the three nineteenth-century covered bridges through which you will ride, you might want to spend some time at the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve. And don't miss the chance to poke around the ruins of an old lime kiln in the historic Catoctin Furnace area; the kiln dates back to the late 1700s. Watch for various fish hatchery ponds. Terrain: moderately rolling hills. Traffic generally light but heavier around Frederick. Note: Verifier Marks led the successful campaign to get Maryland traffic law changes to allow bicyclists to use the shoulders of most non-freeway controlled-access highways, such as Rte. 15.

I am what you would consider a novice at road biking and I often wondered why someone would ride on a bike for 30 or more miles. Now I clearly understand! The ride was fantastic with great scenery of the country and the mountain views. I had a great time, but I was alone and I feel that this is a trip where two or more people should share. Besure to make that change in directions on mile 34.1 you must turn right! This was a great ride and I am looking forward to doing it again.

Biking this trail would have been great if the directions were correct. One part of the directions said to take a left on fish hatchery rd and it should have said take a right. Be sure to turn RIGHT at Mile 34.1!!!
