Awesome trail.. my new favorite. Beautiful unique scenery. Focal point of trip is a rocky playground that is a crawlers dream.
Long way to the best part of this trail, the actual "Rocks". We have a Land Rover LR3 and have been out her twice and up the rock 3x. Once was with the Land Rover dealer with many different types and years of Rovers, once was alone. Not sure if any 4x4 could climb the rock, but I guess so. It looks difficult but went up it without any issues at all. In fact, it basically drives up the rock itself. Fun "moon" looking landscape here. Need high clearance to not only get up the rock, but also and more importantly - to get down the other side. Good group ride, good picnic areas.
Please be respectful of trails, leave GATES as you find them, and the rock area itself so it is preserved for all to enjoy for many years. It is unspoiled with no litter and no graffiti. I can picture this spot easily being ruined by a few disrespectful people. On the way up are DUMP sites where people are shooting - all are disgusting sites along a really nice wilderness trail. Let's protect this area!
This is a great trail, perhaps my favorite in the area. The trail can be logically cut up into 2 sections - East and West of the large and interesting rock formation for which the trail is named. West of Chimney Rock is extremely easy and should be no problem for most any kind of SUV. East of Chimney Rock (or the 'beginning' of the trail as it is presented here) is a lot of fun. I was able to do it without any problem in my stock '07 Toyota FJ Cruiser, but the trail is technical enough that the careless driver could certainly suffer some damage. For the East section of the trail - SEVERE PAINT SCRATCHING IS CERTAIN. If you want to come out of the trail looking like your rig has never been offroad, you will not do it here. Occasionally the brush is cut back, but you should count on some nice pinstripes. Wear them proud, it's worth it!!
