Whiteoak Sink Falls

This is one of the least visited Smoky Mountain waterfalls. Located in a sinkhole, this cataract spills off a ledge directly into a cave, then flows underground. The hike follow a wide and easy trail before dropping into Whiteoak Sink, with its complex underground plumbing system borne out not only in Whiteoak Sink Falls but also a nearby cave. This waterfall trek does include hiking on an unmarked trail. This route to Whiteoak Sink Falls has been used by people for generations, and the trail to the sink is in better condition than many paths in the nearby Cherokee National Forest. The path itself is maintained by the park service, which does not put the trail on maps in order to curtail visitation. So watch your step, and tread lightly in this unusual sinkhole-laden parcel of the Smokies.
