When you arrive at the trailhead of this Tennessee State Natural Area, you are almost to this vertical cataract. Here, you will see Falling Water Falls and the sheer bluffs of lower Pickett Gulf. Much of the state natural area lies below a vertical cliffline, leaving explorers a short loop trail leading to the 110-foot dramatic drop.
The Tennessee state natural areas program is designed to harbor special areas that display superlative natural beauty, and/or harbor unique flora and fauna. The natural areas are especially good for preserving smaller parcels of land that can be protected yet aren’t big enough to be a full-fledged state park.
