The gorge of the Caney Fork River, within the bounds of Rock Island State Park, is rife with waterfalls. You have to drive to two different trailheads to walk to them but it is worth it, especially when you see the power and volume of these cataracts. Great Falls Dam was one of Tennessee’s earliest hydroelectric projects, located just upstream of Great Falls, a natural cataract on the Caney Fork River, where the waterway narrows into a gorge just below its confluence with the Collins River. Construction on the dam was completed by late 1916. A one-unit powerhouse was erected adjacent to the dam. Ten years later, the dam was reconstructed and a second power-generating unit was built.
