This Tennessee state natural area harbors three distinct and alluring waterfalls within its confines. The trail system here leads you to these cataracts set in the hollows and hills of the Duck River watershed. It is also a fine spring wildflower destination. Machine Falls is the primary cataract, but the others are glittering jewels in the crown of the preserve. Short Spring State Natural Area, at 420 acres, not only features three waterfalls but also a deep hardwood forest, wildfl ower-laden ravines, shoals, springs, and even part of a lake. Back in the 1820s, Thomas Busby saw power in the flowing water of the area streams and built a mill here. After the mill closed, locals tried to lure outsiders to the valley, portraying the gleaming springs as having healing powers.
