Alta is an old-fashioned, unpretentious ski area that has resisted change and is proud of it. Unlike almost every other ski destination in the country, this one has eschewed the mania for high-speed chairs and trams, thus limiting the number of skiers on the mountain at any one time. Alta also has resisted the pressure to accommodate snowboarders. It’s a resort with lots of character and lots of characters who like things more or less the way they have been for over half a century. This chapter contains a thorough description of the resort including how to get there, mountain statistics, trail profiles, lodging, dining, nightlife, and entertainment.
