It’s hard to compare Big Sky with any other resort in this book. It is indeed unique—as unique as the state of Montana itself. Big Sky is an unaffected major-league resort perched at the base of Lone Mountain, a perfect pyramid of a peak halfway between Bozeman and Yellowstone National Park—in the middle of nowhere. Of course, that’s part of its uniqueness. The resort is in the middle of nearly 10,000 acres of wildlands acquired in the early ’70s by the late NBC newscaster and Montana native Chet Huntley and his partners. Big Sky is a wide-open and gloriously scenic resort where spotting a golden eagle in flight is more exciting than catching a fleeting glimpse of a celebrity. Notwithstanding the 113,000-acre spread owned by Ted Turner over in the next valley, there’s considerably more wildlife than star life at Big Sky.
