Were a child to draw a ski mountain, Sugarloaf/USA is what it would look like. Big and remote, with an above-treeline summit, this New England classic has a soul that speaks to all who love no-frills skiing and snowboarding. After making the 2 2 - to 4-hour drive from Portland or Boston, possibly dodging moose and other wildlife en route, you know you’ve arrived when you come around what Sugarloafers call “Ohmygosh! Corner” on Route 27 and see this Maine giant looming ahead, calling out to you like a white triangular magnet. The scenery is matched by the friendliness of its legions of devotees. The locals figure that if you can make the effort to get here, they’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and freely welcome you into their skiing and snowboarding brethren. Beloved for that mountain-life camaraderie, Sugarloaf is also renowned for having the only lift-serviced above-treeline skiing in the East, in an area called the Snowfields. At night streetlights show a path up to the base lodge. A stream rushes by, and bridges are perfect places for a quiet chat or more. This chapter contains a thorough description of the resort including how to get there, mountain statistics, trail profiles, lodging, dining, nightlife, and entertainment.
