The Great River Road (so named in 1938) follows the Mississippi River from its headwaters at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to the Gulf of Mexico. Marked by signs showing green steamboat wheels on a white background, this drive follows the main highway and the Great River Road from Prescott to La Crosse, 125 miles south. The river is flanked on both sides by high, rugged bluffs, and dotted with bluff-side towns. Along the way you will learn some of the ancient landmarks that have guided Mississippi River travelers for centuries. Special attractions: Lake Pepin, the world’s largest six-pack, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birthplace, Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, Perrot State Park, camping, fishing, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, wildlife watching.
