This 30-mile drive within Monongahela National Forest climbs 2,500 feet up the steep Allegheny Front on a dirt road to magnificent views at the Dolly Sods, a windswept high plain with a climate and flora similar to northern Canada. The Dolly Sods lie on the eastern edge of the Allegheny Plateau at an elevation of about 4,050 feet. The high windswept plains and one-sided spruces of the Dolly Sods are a unique piece of the boreal forest in West Virginia, with a climate and plant life similar to parts of northern Canada. The Dolly Sods also provide some of the best views in the state, overlooking ridge after ridge to the east. Special Attractions: The Allegheny Front, the highland plain, unusual plants, one-sided spruces, unsurpassed 50-mile scenic views, walks and hikes, and migrating hawks and other birds. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.

We did a 3 day hike. The first day was all rain, but it didn't stop us. The scenery is fantastic. Trails are well marked. The trails were easy with a few rocky slope exceptions. Overall this is a nice weekend hike.
