A 30-mile drive from the baths of Berkeley Springs past the Panorama Overlook along Cacapon Creek to the Paw Paw Tunnel at the Chesapeake and Ohio National Historic Canal. If there is a theme for this 30-mile drive, it is “water.” Start with some ablutions at the bubbling town of Berkeley Springs, famed since colonial days for its warm mineralized spas and baths. Then head west across Cacapon Ridge with its outstanding views of the Potomac River. Follow sinuous Cacapon Creek through thick woods to the town of Paw Paw. The drive ends at the Potomac River at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park, where you can hike through woods along the canal towpath and through the 3,000-foot-long Paw Paw Tunnel. Special Attractions: The spas, baths, shops, and sights of Berkeley Springs; Panorama Overlook; Cacapon Mountain and Cacapon Creek; and the Paw Paw Tunnel of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal at the Potomac River. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.

I've done this scenic drive many times during all seasons. There are some winding roads close to Berkeley Springs, so you should take your time (this is definitely not a road for speeding). The drive is a lovely way to get from Berkeley Springs, WV to Cumberland, MD without having to drive a single mile on the highway. I don't think there is a single place between the above two towns to stop for gas, so be sure to fill up before you leave. Give yourself enough time to explore the C&O Canal trail and tunnel new Paw Paw, WV (I suggest taking a flashlight for your walk through the tunnel!). I live in beautiful south-central PA, so I'm spoiled when it comes to views and vistas... otherwise I would rank this route a 5-star.
