This 90-mile drive climbs north from the Columbia River on U.S. Highway 97 to Goldendale, east over the High Prairie and through Trout Lake, and heads south past the Ice Caves, through the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. You return past the Big Lava Bed and back to the Columbia River at the town of Cook. Goldendale offers a scenic loop tour and historic homes tours of its own. It is also the home of the highly respected Klickitat County Museum. Goldendale calls itself the Golden Gate to the Columbia Gorge. A bypasshighway has been built around Goldendale, but this drive goes right through town. Special attractions: Goldendale Observatory, Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Ice Caves, Big Lava Bed.
