Burke’s Garden is a 10-mile-long valley entirely surrounded by mountains. The valley consists of fertile, rolling farmland, pastures, and woods. This unstructured 40-mile drive allows you to explore this unique area. You can also visit the Historic Crab Orchard Museum and Pioneer Park which has exhibits ranging from a 500-million-year-old fossil tree to an original 1831 McCormick reaper. Burke’s Garden east of Tazewell is an elliptical valley about 10 miles long, totally enclosed by circular Garden Mountain. Inside this sparsely populated valley is some of the richest farmland in the state with views in all directions of rolling country with mountains in the background. This short drive, less than 40 miles long and with no specific route to follow within the valley, will allow you to explore the nooks and crannies of this unique area. Special attractions: Burke’s Garden itself is the main attraction, including the enclosed valley, rich farmlands, woods, and mountains views. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.

This is one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you enjoy the car tour, riding a bicycle around the valley is even better. I have traveled here all four seasons and am not sure which is my favorite. The south entrance to the valley at the top of Garden Mountain crosses the Appalachian Trail. Day hikes in either direction offer spectacular views. This an excellent day trip.
