Lee’s Retreat is a 50-mile, historical drive that traces the closing days of the Civil War as Union General Ulysses S. Grant relentlessly pursued Confederate General Robert E. Lee to Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. The drive crosses much of the rural Piedmont area of central Virginia with numerous stops at historical or military points of interest. Special attractions: The main attractions are the historical stops which feature short, interpretive radio broadcasts. Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park is the scene of the last major battle of the war. Appomattox Court House National Historic Park, where Lee surrendered to Grant, has been restored to look as it did in 1865. The drive passes through Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest and near two state parks. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
