The Northern Neck is the stretch of land extending east of Fredericksburg between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers. From Fredericksburg this 70-mile drive follows the shoreline of the wide tidewater Potomac, past several stops of historical, scenic, and scientific interest to end at Reedville, a fishing village on the shores of Chesapeake Bay. Along the way you’ll pass through gently rolling farmland and woods, with frequent views of inlets and bays. Beach walking, historic mansions, and old fishing villages may all be of interest. The Northern Neck east of Fredericksburg is a peninsula running generally northwest to southeast, bordered by the estuaries of the Potomac River to the north and the Rappahannock River to the south. Special attractions: Historic sites include the restored birthplace of George Washington, the birthplace of James Monroe, and the aristocratic mansion and birthplace of Robert E. Lee and the Lee family.
