The drive covers the Fredericksburg Battlefield on the outskirts of Fredericksburg, and the Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House battlefields west of Fredericksburg. The region is one of flat or gently rolling land with a mixture of open fields and hardwood, second-growth forests. This 40-mile loop tours the four battlefields—Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House—preserved in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park in Fredericksburg and vicinity. The drive begins and ends in Fredericksburg and extends west of the city about 15 miles. The country outside the city is gently rolling with a mixture of open fields and farms, hardwood forests, rural houses, and some suburban housing. The park areas have been partially restored to look as they did at the time of the Civil War. Special attractions: The Civil War battlefields themselves are the main points of interest, with their maps, exhibits, explanations, and tours.
