Scenic Driving Utah
by Joe Bensen revised and updated by Christy Karras (Falcon Guides)
A high-alpine drive along the eastern flank of 11,877-foot Mount Nebo. This really isn’t a loop at all, despite its official name. The 38-mile Nebo Loop Scenic Byway is a north-south mountain drive that runs between the regional centers of Payson and Nephi. This extremely popular excursion provides spectacular close-up views of imposing Mount Nebo, impressive vistas of Utah Valley and the Wasatch Mountains, and abundant opportunities for high-level alpine hikes. It is a relatively short drive that makes a nice half-day outing.
Special attractions: Payson Lakes Recreation Area, Mount Nebo Wilderness Area, Devil’s Kitchen Geologic Interest Site, hiking, fishing, and backpacking. Nearby attractions: Tintic Mining District, Little Sahara Recreation Area, Provo/Utah Lake, and attractive communities of the Sanpete Valley. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
