A basin and range drive across broad, dry valleys and rough desert hills. This is one of but a handful of drives in this guide that touch on the rough, desolate region of the Great Basin, the desert land that lies to the west of Utah’s famed mountain and high plateau country. This is not an easy region to appreciate on first sight; it resists the modern tourist almost as staunchly as it did the early settlers who quickly learned simply to avoid it. This place is the dry, cracked alkali flat, the volcanic plain devoid of vegetation, home to rattlesnake and tumbleweed. But in its remoteness and its sheer resistance to Man’s attempts to domesticate it, it has a raw, imposing, and eternal power. Special attractions: Tintic District mining towns, Great Basin desert views, Little Sahara Recreation Area, site of Topaz internment camp, and Fort Deseret. Nearby attractions: Nebo Loop Scenic Byway, Pony Express Trail Scenic Backway, and Notch Peak Loop Scenic Backway. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
