A high-elevation mountain and plateau drive, this loop is composed of three separate designated scenic byways, giving two major options to complete either a short or long loop. The scenery is a terrific combination of alpine forest, aspen groves, and Southwestern sandstone. The Markagunt Plateau is the chief water source for southwestern Utah, the birthplace of the Virgin and Sevier Rivers. Indeed, the name “markagunt” means “highland of trees” in Paiute. This drive is highlighted by the fantastic eroded sandstone of Cedar Breaks; this sculpted sandstone jewel is placed within a lush setting of evergreen forest and aspen groves. The drive’s four main roads are paved and suitable for all vehicles. Special attractions: Cedar City, Cedar Canyon, Cedar Breaks National Monument, lava fields, wildflowers, Panguitch Lake, Brian Head Ski Resort, and old Parowan. Nearby attractions: Kolob Reservoir Scenic Backway (Zion National Park/Lava Point), Red Canyon, Highway 12 Scenic Byway, Dry Lakes/Summit Canyon Scenic Backway, old Paragonah, and Parowan Gap pictographs.
