A 25-mile mostly paved road through rugged mountains, past a historic general store to a large, accessible waterfall. This drive follows a winding route through the mountains west of Boone, past the historic Mast General Store and an Episcopal mission to thundering Elk Falls in the Pisgah National Forest. Parts of the road are very narrow and winding, with blind curves (particularly between Valle Crucis and Banner Elk). Large RVs and trailers are not recommended.
Much of the route is a state scenic byway. Special attractions: Mast General Store, Elk Falls, Pisgah National Forest, fall colors, scenic views, hiking, and fishing. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
