This 91-mile trek through the Swan Valley is flanked by the Swan and Mission mountains. It follows the Clearwater and Swan rivers and a chain of glistening lakes through larch, spruce, and pine forests with great hiking opportunities. Just after you begin the drive look for a pullout on the west side of the road. Here, an exhibit offers interpretive information about the Blackfoot-Clearwater Game Range, a 50,000-acre refuge for elk and other wildlife, including deer, grouse, ducks, Canada geese, eagles, and bears. You can drive, walk, or mountain bike through the refuge from late May to the end of November.
