The drive, mostly on quiet county roads, includes a loop around prestigious Gull Lake, stops in resort communities such as Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, and Cross Lake, and a foray into the Cuyuna Iron Range, where the deepest lakes are man-made. Special attractions: Animated, talking Paul Bunyan at Paul Bunyan Amusement Center in Brainerd; Lumbertown USA, a replica of a nineteenth century logging village on Gull Lake; Paul Bunyan Trail between Brainerd and Hackensack; hiking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding in Pillsbury State Forest; Croft Mine Historical Park in Crosby; picturesque resort villages of Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, and Cross Lake; fishing, canoeing, water-skiing, biking, golf, tennis. Living the Twin Cities, I've been traveling to the Crosslake-Nisswa area north of Brainerd for 20 years. The area is rich in golfing, boating, trail riding (ATV, snowmobile, bike, and rollerblading), and fishing (both wet and icy). Driving up from Minneapolis, you may begin to wonder where the lakes are as you cross the prarie portion of the state (lower Minnesota looks like Iowa with less corn). But from Brainerd on north, there are lakes a plenty. Most roads can only go straight for so far until they have to curve to avoid running into a lake. The mixed woods surround the lakes and line the roadways, providing a scenic drive on any road. Enjoy it at 90 degress in the August or -10 in January. In Summer, make sure you stop the car and listen for the loons and spot the eagles. Enjoy. tjw
