This drive begins and ends just west of Tawas City, which is located on the eastern coast of the lower peninsula. The drive, a 68-mile loop, takes you through broadleaf forests, a red pine plantation, and stops at several monuments including the stunning Lumberman’s Monument, a tall bronze sculpture depicting the “river rats” who drove logs down the mighty Au Sable River. You also visit serene Iargo Springs, a fresh spring that percolates water from the forest floor right into the Au Sable River. You end the loop drive by proceeding through Tuttle Marsh, a wetland dedicated to the preservation of waterfowl and wildlife habitats. Special attractions: Corsair Recreation Area, Lumberman’s Monument, Canoe Racer’s Monument, Iargo Springs, Au Sable River, Foote Dam Overlook, and Tuttle Marsh. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.

I went out on a mission to find a scenic drive to spend my otherwise lazy sunday afternoon, so I ended up on Trails.com. I got signed up, and an hour later I was on the road for this scenic drive. I live near Detroit, so the entire trip took around 8 hours. I only spent a 3-4 on the route itself. I loved the twisty, secluded 2 lane roads lined with tall, thick trees, and the monuments were delightful. I needed to get out of the big city, and this trip was just what I needed.
