A 12-mile Type IV byway that climbs 2,000 feet by snowmobile and skis into the well-preserved ghost town of Garnet in the Garnet Range east of Missoula. The town is also accessible by road the rest of the year. The 12-mile Garnet Range Back Country Byway climbs 1,800 feet from Montana Highway 200 to the crest of the Garnet Range and the well-preserved ghost town of Garnet. The Type IV byway, designated for snowmobile and cross-country ski use, is part of the Garnet National Winter Recreation Trail system. The BLM maintains 55 miles of developed winter trails in the Garnet Range. A map of the trails is available at the BLM office in Missoula. Special Attractions: Garnet, Coloma (ghost town), scenic views, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, picnicking, Garnet National Winter Recreation Trail.
