Scenic Driving Alaska and the Yukon

This is one of the mowst memorable stretches of roads I have ever been on. The trip starts out by ferry across the mighty Yukon river. Once on the other side of the river you head up a mountain on a 1.5 lane gravel road. I highly recommend using a "moose catcher" on your vehicle.--a metal screen that covers your headlights, radiator, and other vital parts on the front of the vehicle. The year that we did this trip, we encounter a slight detour on the way. It was a one lane mud track, where a pilot truck took several cars one way then made the return trip with vehicles from the opposite direction. It had been raining which made the mud track very slippery and we had a rear-wheel drive vehicle. It was quite an adrenaline rush fish-tailing on this track with a cliff on the left and a sheer drop on the right into a tiny, ribbon of a river below. After appox. 5 miles of the detour we joined the main (1.5 lane gravel) road. At the top of the mountain after the detour there was a little store,"The Top Of The World Jewelry" which I highly recommend stopping at. The scenery on this drive is amazing, if you can take your eyes of the wheel long enough to look. If you are driving to Alaska, this is the only route worth taking from the Yukon into Alaska. Happy Roadtripping! :)
