National Forest Scenic Byways East & South

A great short drive! The road is well maintained, but definitely a tight drive with many spots where you should be cautious. You'll travel through a lush forest with magnificent pines and dogwoods, stopping to take in some splendid views from the exposed outcroppings. This a fun, short, 1 hour detour (or more depending on how often you stop) from the monotony of the southern interstates. Unfortunately, the observatory on Cheaha Mountain was closed for renovation when I visited during Summer 2002, but it should be reopened already or quite soon. There's gas, lodging, site camping, and a general store on Cheaha Mountain and a lot of good hiking in the area. Definitely worth a side trip if you're in Alabama.
