The Highlands Scenic Tour travels through diverse vegetation and historic mining country, providing beautiful views and access to a wilderness area. Virginia State Highway is a paved two-lane road. Forest Road and Star Route are narrower, two-lane gravel roads. Star Route is steep with hairpin turns, not recommended for large RVs or towed units. Traffic is usually light to moderate on the byway. Special attractions: Rich Hole Wilderness, historic mines, spring blossoms, autumn foliage, far-ranging vistas, fishing, hiking.
