The 610-acre Ruffingham Meadow WMA was formed when Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife impounded Bartlett Stream. A small pond quickly formed, and the balance of the impoundment became wetland. This soon attracted ducks, and Ruffingham Meadow became a prime destination for waterfowl hunters and later, for birders. Ducks flock to Dorso Wildlife Management Area (WMA) for the wild rice planted for them by the State of Maine. Look for Wood Duck, American Black Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal, Mallard, and Hooded Merganser. Other birds of interest include American Bittern, Least Bittern, Belted Kingfisher, Canada Goose, and Sora Rail. Upland portions of the WMA host American Woodcock, Ruffed Grouse, and Wild Turkey.
