This is an easy ramble in one of the lesser known sections of Acadia National Park. It’s a good choice for riders looking to escape crowds and traffic during the busy summer season on neighboring Mount Desert Island. To most of the two million annual visitors to Acadia National Park, the Schoodic Peninsula is the land you see across Frenchman Bay as you stand at a Park Road overlook on Mount Desert Island. Few people realize that the Schoodic Peninsula is also part of the national park — in fact, it’s the only part that isn’t on an island. Views of rocky headlands, Frenchman Bay, and the general natural beauty of the downeast coast are pretty much the same on Schoodic as on Mount Desert Island. The crowds are the missing element. This short ride could be done very quickly, or better yet, you could bring a picnic for a stop at Schoodic Point. As with all coastal cycling, be prepared for fog that rolls in fast.
