This section of the Pisgah National Forest provides outstanding spring birding in areas easily accessible by car as well as several excellent trails. Elevation ranges from 2,000 to over 4,000 feet and includes a variety of habitats. Habitats: Hardwood and mixed pine-hemlock forest, rocky cliffs, fast-flowing streams and waterfalls, rhododendron-laurel thickets. Key birds: Summer: Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Worm-eating, Hooded, and Canada Warbler; American Redstart; Whip-poor-will; Broad-winged Hawk; Peregrine Falcon; Scarlet Tanager; Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Winter: Brown Creeper; Red-breasted Nuthatch; Winter Wren; Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Year-round: Ruffed Grouse.
