The refuge straddles the Pee Dee River and is part of the Savannah–Santee–Pee Dee ecosystem. It contains 8,843 acres of natural area, including 3,000 acres of contiguous bottomland hardwood forest along Brown Creek, 1,200 acres of upland pine forest, and a 4,300-acre mosaic of croplands, old fields, moist soil units, and mixed pine-hardwood forests. Habitats: Bottomland hardwood forest, upland pine forest, croplands, old fields, beaver ponds, open water, mixed pine-hardwood forest. Key birds: Summer: Chuck-will’s-widow; Whip-poor-will; Prothonotary, Hooded, and Kentucky Warbler; Grasshopper Sparrow; Indigo Bunting; Blue Grosbeak. Winter: Snow Goose; Sedge Wren; sparrows. Year-round: Bald Eagle; Brown-headed Nuthatch; Red-headed Woodpecker.
