William B. Umstead State Park is administered by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation and consists of two sections, known as Crabtree Creek and Reedy Creek. Together they total 5,381 acres. Most of the forested areas contain trees sixty-plus years old. Hurricane and tornado activity since the early 1990s has created numerous patches of open, regenerating vegetation. Nineteen miles of hiking trails and about 11 miles of bridle trails provide access to most of the park. Habitats: Pine forest, mixed pine-hardwood, upland oak-hickory, several small lakes, floodplains of Crabtree, Sycamore, and Reedy Creeks. Key birds: Summer: Hooded and Kentucky Warbler; Summer and Scarlet Tanager. Winter: Red-breasted Nuthatch; Red Crossbill; Pine Siskin; Year-round: Brown-headed Nuthatch.
