These 160,000 acres are administered by the U.S. Forest Service. In addition to extensive birding opportunities, visitors can enjoy a diversity of wildlife and plant life. Habitats: Pine forest, mixed pine-hardwood forest, pine savannas, several lakes, streams, drainage basins, marshland, and pocosins, bounded by the Neuse and White Oak Rivers and Bogue Sound. Key birds: Spring and early summer: Mississippi Kite; Bald Eagle; Chuck-will’s-widow; Whip-poor-will; Great Crested Flycatcher; Eastern Kingbird; Yellow, Worm-eating, Prothonotary, Swainson’s, Black-throated Blue, and Black-throated Green Warbler; American Redstart; Bachman’s Sparrow; Blue Grosbeak; Summer Tanager; Painted and Indigo Bunting. August: Wood Stork. Year-round: White Ibis; Red-cockaded and Red-headed Woodpecker; Brown-headed Nuthatch.
