Several birding hot spots near the recreation area provide a variety of diverse habitats and birds. Carolina Beach State Park is best during the fall when large mixed flocks of migrant land birds can be common. Habitats: Beach, salt marshes, mudflats, maritime communities. Key birds: Summer: Brown Pelican; Least Tern; Wilson’s Plover; Painted Bunting. Fall: Peregrine Falcon. Winter: Red-throated Loon; Great Cormorant; Long-tailed Duck; Marbled Godwit; Purple Sandpiper; Short-billed Dowitcher; Nelson’s and Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow. Year-round: White Ibis; Little Blue Heron; Snowy Egret; Black Skimmer; American Oystercatcher; Seaside Sparrow.
