The Sunset Beach area includes both mainland and island habitats. The island itself is approximately 3 miles long, with ocean beaches and a network of salt marshes and tidal flats. While a favorite summer vacation spot, the developed areas consist mostly of single-family homes. Habitats: Ocean, coastal inlets, coastal flats, salt marsh, Intracoastal Waterway, floodplain forest, cypress swamp, creek, freshwater lakes, Calabash River, sewage lagoons. Key birds: Summer: Least Tern; American Oystercatcher; Black Skimmer; Anhinga; Wood Stork; Little Blue Heron; Wilson’s Plover; Chuck-will’s-widow; Great Crested Flycatcher; Eastern Kingbird; Summer Tanager; Blue Grosbeak; Indigo and Painted Bunting. Winter: Red-throated Loon; Horned Grebe; Hooded Merganser; Greater Scaup; Canvasback; Marbled Godwit; Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow. Year-round: Snowy Egret; Brown Pelican; Redheaded Woodpecker; Brown-headed Nuthatch; White Ibis.
