Saugatuck bills itself as Michigan's "art coast" and lives up to the slogan, with more than two dozen galleries featuring art in every medium. Some are also working studios. The artistic sensibilities of many residents lend a funky, energetic vibe to the community, which is also known for being gay-friendly. A community with strong religious roots, Holland reserves Sundays for church and family. The ride back to Saugatuck is more direct-with a long stretch on the aptly named Beeline-but with the same lightly traveled roads. The abundance of creativity concentrated in a small town has a critical-mass effect on the community. Even those who haven't cultivated an appreciation for art can't help but notice the public restrooms painted with a visage of Georges Seurat's work, or the outdoor sculptures displayed outside galleries.
