Port Austin, the departure point for this ride, is at the very tip of Michigan's Thumb, a wide peninsula covered with farm fields that pokes into Lake Huron. While it's the Thumb that gives Michigan its distinctive mitten shape, many Michiganders write off this defining region as rural, flat, and uninteresting, not worth going out of your way (as you must) to get there. As a resident of the real up north, I was one of them. But the bicycling was a pleasant surprise. First, it wasn't completely flat. Second, the roads were lightly traveled. Third, the shoreline still contains undeveloped stretches, with great open lake views. Terrain: Relatively flat, but some gradual uphill and downhill grades. Wind coming off Lake Huron can be strong.
