Riders who take on this route will come away with a true sense of place about northwest Michigan: its hilly topography edged with shoreline, its seemingly contrary environment of sand and woods, and its maritime history. While the distance is relatively short, one extremely challenging uphill and the rapid descent that follows bump this ride up into the cruise category. Numerous points of interest within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, from the Maritime Museum in Glen Haven to the Dune Climb, can easily make this a full day's ride. Shipping and lumbering were the industries that built many Lake Michigan communities, including Glen Haven. It's a sign of the times and the new economic base that Glen Haven is now a ghost town, while a couple miles east, the artsy community of Glen Arbor is thriving. Terrain: Rolling to hilly.
