At night Cape Lookout National Seashore is one of the darkest places you will ever be. With no artificial lights for miles around, you’ll be awed by the blackness of the sky and how long it’s been since you’ve seen that many stars. If you plan to spend the night, or several nights, on Cape Lookout National Seashore, you have two options—primitive camping or renting a cabin. Camping is allowed on all three islands of the national seashore. The cabins are pretty much in the middle of nowhere on North and South Core Banks, miles from the areas of highest visitation—Portsmouth Village—and the lighthouse area. The cabins are managed by park concessionaires and must be reserved and paid for before you get to the island.
