Cape Hatteras National Seashore allows driving on the beach via seventeen vehicle access ramps. It might seem intrusive to purists, but driving on the beach is not necessarily harmful to the environment— if everyone follows the rules. The convenience factor is off-roading’s biggest asset. You can pack the car full of fishing equipment, water-sports gear, food, drinks, chairs, umbrellas, toys, dogs, children, and whatever else you might want and not have to worry about lugging it all over the dunes.
Anglers especially enjoy this because they can drive the beach and read the water to find the best fishing spot. Then if nothing happens in that spot, they just hop in the truck and find another place. Being able to drive on the beach is good for less ambulatory people too, like children, the elderly, and the disabled, because it makes their walk to the shore much shorter. The seventeen vehicle access ramps span the length of Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke Islands. See the Off-Roading map for access ramp locations; note that several of the ramps do not allow access from late May through mid-September
