Heading up the hill from the junction, the first major stop is the Upper Terraces, 2.1 miles south of Mammoth Junction (the following mileage readings taken from Mammoth Junction). Take the short, one-way Upper Terrace Loop Drive to see the gigantic or mammoth hot springs complex and some excellent scenic views. Killdeer are often found on the geothermal runoff channels, and Great Horned Owl frequent this same area. In the limber pine/juniper habitat look for Mountain Bluebird, Townsend’s Solitaire, and sometimes even Red Crosbill pass over the area. After returning to the entrance of the loop drive, continue heading south on the main road. From here to the Hoodoo’s look for Red-naped Sapsucker, Williamson’s Sapsucker, MacGillivray’s Warbler, Green-tailed Towhee, and sometimes Orange-crowned Warbler.
